The Dangers of the Sun
If we all know the dangers of the sun, the importance of the quality of protection
of the sunglasses remains often under estimated. Repeated exposures to UV give rise
to damage of the retina (retinopathy), inflammations (keratitis) which can go until
blindness, a premature ageing of the cornea, cataracts and various other irreversible
ocular lesions.
The infrared rays disperse the sun's heat and accentuate the effects of UV on the
crystalline lens. They have a drying effect on the cornea and lead to visual fatigue.
The blue light component of the visible spectrum is not easily brought into focus
by the naked eye resulting in a blurred image and visual fatigue.
Moreover, blue light is responsible for the dazzling effects of strong sunlight
and can lead to errors in visual perception and judgement.
